You see the woman roasting a pinky-sized sausage over a pitiful mound of sticks, a few flames barely licking the meat, and she looks up at you with a face full of wrinkles and hair that hardly covers her ears, and she smiles, and you stand there in the middle of the empty street and smile but you don’t know what to do. You’d like to give her a dollar, an American one that will buy her a month’s worth of food, but you know it might insult her. You think, won’t the dollar just be stolen, out here in the open, without a home and an iron gate for any sort of protection?
